Results of KMW 2012

More than a thousand media business professionals from all around the world have gathered on September 11-14 in Kyiv to attend international forum KYIV MEDIA WEEK 2012.

During the week a range of industrial conferences, international content market and some special events were held, each of which deals with a specific issues in a certain area of media business.

KYIV MEDIA WEEK 2012 participants list represents above 400 media companies, and what is important – the geography of attendants has expanded significantly. Therefore this year a number of leading international companies from CIS region, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas have joined the event.  

Format Show


Format Show - international conference and screening dedicated to the newest trends of TV formats industry – was held on September 11, 2012, and has gathered more than 200 TV business professionals. In course of Format Show the screenings of the newest TV formats from core international distributors were held, including in particular: FremantleMedia, CBS, Banijay International, BBC Worldwide, Sony Pictures Television, Zodiak Rights, Endemol, Red Arrow International, ITV, Armoza Formats, Global Agency and others. Notably, that Format Show was held three weeks prior to the main international content market, nevertheless the audience has seen about 80 TV formats, 28 of which were brand new. Thanks to Format Show international prodcos and distributors had a great opportunity to get acquainted with the local broadcasters’ demand for the TV formats and to find out what kind of content they are looking for. As a result – in the nearest future a number of new shows will start up on the air of Ukrainian, Russian and other CIS countries’ TV channels.

Ukrainian Content Market


The second international audiovisual content market Ukrainian Content Market was held on September 12-14, 2012. The market floor hosted 62 exhibition suites, where sellers presented all kinds of media content – from ready-made feature films on out to  TV formats, shows and series. Among UCM attendants such a leading international prodcos and distributors were presented: WeiT Media, FILM.UA, TV Azteca, BBC Worldwide, Endemol Group, Cineflix Rights, DRG, Global Agency, ITV Inter Medya, Star Media, Telemundo Internacional, Zodiak Rights, Russian World Studios, СTB Film Company, Central Partnership, main TV channels from CIS region: Russia TV channel, CTC, TNT Broadcasting Network, TV3, Domashniy TV Channel, TV Center, Television Company STREAM,  Sony Pictures Television Russia – from Russia; Ukrainian TV channels like Inter, 1+1, Ukraine, New TV channel, STB, ICTV, TET, Tonis and others; Kazakh KTK, 31 Channel, Seven Channel, NTK, First Channel Eurasia; Baltic BTV, LNT, Viasat Baltic, First Baltic Channel; such a Moldavian TV groups like Dixi Media, Top-Media, Prime TV; Belorussia was presented by Second National TV Channel (ONT) and many others. The sellers working at UCM without exhibition suites (68 companies) and buyers (above 130 companies) had a great opportunity to negotiate and tie up beneficial contacts in Participants Club, besides for that purposes a Meeting Coordination Center was at participants’ service as well.

Film Business: challenges, features, opportunities


The Fifth International Сonference “Film Business: challenges, features, opportunities” was held on September 12, 2012 and has gathered representatives of more than 65 companies from Ukraine, Russia, CIS and European countries, USA (generally over 160 film industry professionals). The dominant feature in this year's conference was coproduction with all its aspects. The program included two panel discussions: "Co-production as a profitable venture - reality or fiction?" and "State film support: reality or fiction?", as well as special session "Distribution, marketing, profit maximization of the full-length movies". The conference's content has excited a huge interest among the participants, considering that before in Ukraine film coproduction issues have never been studied so deeply on a professional level. The distinctive feature of Film Business - 2012 was its general concept conversion - from extensive discussions to practice: the experts shared their experience based on real-life projects. Special guest expert of the conference – American producer Rick McCallum, well known to the mainstream audience for his big-time work on the three Star Wars prequels – “The Phantom Menace”, “Attack of the Clones” and “Revenge of the Sith”. 

Television as Business

On September 13th “Television as Business 2012” conference was attended by core representatives of Ukrainian television industry, advertising agencies, production studios, NGO’s, hard and soft manufacturers and investors. The participants’ geography included Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Moldova, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Great Britain, France, Belgium and USA. Above 30 Ukrainian and international media experts gave their speeches and took part in panel discussions in course of “Television as Business 2012”. The program of the conference was dedicated to financial planning, the best television formats and platforms, creative and executive management teams, competitive technologies of production and distribution of content. Notably, the “Media leaders’ summit” panel discussion has gathered representatives of the leading TV industry holdings: Yaroslav Porokhnyak (Inter TV-channel, Chairman of the Management Board), Oleksandr Bohutskyi (ICTV TV channel, Director), Yekaterina Lapshina, (media-holding “Media Group Ukraine”, Director of Media Business Development).  Equally interesting and substantial was panel discussion “Sponsorship 360° – new era of cross-platform media sponsorship project”, initiated by Starlight Media Group (Ukraine).

Digital Broadcasting in Ukraine


In September 14, VI Digital Forum "Digital broadcasting in Ukraine" gathered professionals for discussion of the process of introducing digital television in Ukraine, its problems and prospects. Members have learned to work on the preparation of transition to digital broadcasting for last year, and discussed challenges and potential problems of the next periods and also compared successes and plans with international practice of digital broadcasting implementation. Guest speaker was David Wood, deputy of director for technical issues of European Union of broadcasters, Switzerland.

Special events in course of KYIV MEDIA WEEK 2012

Simultaneously with the conferences and content market a range of special events were held in course of KYIV MEDIA WEEK 2012. 

On September 11, 2012 in course of the Format Show conference the Final of the first Ukrainian Ideas Pitching contest was held. Ideas Pitching – is the presentation of innovative original entertaining TV projects by independent authors. The Ideas Pitching project has been initiated by 1+1 Media and the organizer is Media Resources Management. “Family or Heart Knows No Law” by Vladimir Moskalets became the Ideas Pitching winner project. As result 1+1 TV channel will produce the pilot episode of the show, and arguably the idea will grow from the draft concept into the full-featured TV project. Besides the winner was gifted a special prize –ticket for the 4-days seminar “Story” by screenwriting guru Robert McKee (October 11-14, 2012 in Kyiv, Ukraine).

International Emmy Awards 2012 Judging Semi-Final in the category "TV movie/mini-series'' was held in Kyiv on September 14, 2012 in the course of KYIV MEDIA WEEK. Two applicants selected in Kyiv have already proceeded to the final round of judging. The Final-winners will be awarded at the 40th International Emmy Awards in New York on November 19th, 2012.

Also KYIV MEDIA WEEK has become a partner of the 10th international conference on Computer Graphics CG EVENT EURO 2012, which took place on 8th of September. CG EVENT EURO 2012 was devoted to computer graphics and multimedia, image and video processing, including animation, computer games, cinema SPFX, architectural rendering, physics simulation, realistic rendering, etc. Traditionally the event is held in Moscow but this year due to the 10th anniversary of the conference it was carried out in Kyiv.
