European Cinema is at its Peak of Popularity

During last years European cinema has strengthened its position in the local film markets significantly. There are more and more local projects, which increase joint share of total box-office of the European countries. Today, on 17-th of September, at International Conference Film Business: Challenges, Features, Opportunities held within KYIV MEDIA WEEK 2014 Artem Vakalyuk, Head of Research of Media Resources Management told about the results of releases of local production in the largest theatrical markets in told. In his report, he considered the markets in countries such as France, Britain, Russia, Germany, Italy and Spain.

The most winning position of local production films can be observed in France. From January 1 to June 30 2014 year 169 releases debuted at the cinemas of France. 87 of this films were produced by French filmmakers (including 39 international co-productions with partional funding by the French side). It is noteable that the share of the local cinema in the total box office of the country ($ 625,500,000) was 58.1% . It is the best figure of the last decade.

During the first six months of this year in UK cinemas debuted 163 films in total, including 37 releases of local production, 25 of which were produced jointly with film companies from other countries, mainly the United States. The share of British films in common was $ 555.5 million, which amounts to 39.1%. 

The first half of 2014 on film distribution market in Russia and CIS countries (except Ukraine) gives a chance for moviegoers to watch 232 new releases: 41 of them were produced by Russian (or in cooperation with the Russian) film companies. There were only 5 co-production projects. The total box office of the country in January-June 2014 amounted to $ 525.9 million. The share of the local films is 29.3% of the total box-office of the country. 

Speaking about the German market, there were 171 new releases which were rolled during te first part of the year: 43 of them were produced by German (or in the cooperation with German) movie companies. Co-production for this time made possible releases of  20 films. Total box-office for the country was $ 443,840,000, 36.1% was raised by projects of local production. 

During the reported there were 124 films debuted in Italy. 23of them were produced by Italian filmmakers (including 4 international co-production, involving Italian side). Total box-office of the country is $ 294.1 million. The share of the local cinema is 31.8%. 

In the first six months of this year 194 films had their first night show in Spain: 45 of them were made by the Spanish (or in cooperation with the Spanish) film companies. Plus 17 films were made with the help of co-production. Summary box office in the country during this period amounted to $ 235.1 million, local films won 40.6% of this amount.
