Results of KMW 2013

About 1300 media business professionals and mass media representatives from 35 countries all over the world attended KYIV MEDIA WEEK 2013.

The 3rd KMW edition’s line-up has expanded: alongside the traditional four conferences and Ukrainian Content Market, two more events were added: keynote by Michael Grindon and KIEV CoProduction Meetings.

The round-table “Television and Cinema in Russia and Ukraine: Potential, Achievements and Prospects”

One day prior to KYIV MEDIA WEEK official start, on September 9th, the round-table “Television and Cinema in Russia and Ukraine: Potential, Achievements and Prospects” took place in Radisson Blu Hotel. Michael Grindon, (international TV industry expert, former president of Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI), USA), producer Alexander Rodnyansky (A.R.Films, Russia), Sergei Sozanovsky (FILM.UA Group, Ukraine), top managers of the leading Ukrainian media groups - Vladimir Borodyansky (StarLightMedia), Alexander Tkachenko (1+1 media), Ekaterina Lapshina (SKM) discussed current media market trends, effective models of the television business, political and business aspects of the film and TV industry, the role of the state control and support in the media market development, the importance of emerging markets for distributors and prodcos from the region, the impact of the internet on media sphere, the advertising market in Ukraine and Russia, the synergy between TV channel and its audience, as well as the possibility of Ukrainian media market consolidation.

The round-tablegathered over 65 MSM representatives – business press, TV channels, industrial online media etc.

 

Format Show

On September 10th the International conference and screening of new TV formats “Format Show” became an official opening of the 3rd edition of KMW.

This year “Format Show” participants had opportunity to get acquainted with 88 TV formats (over 40 of them – international premieres) by core international distributors from all around the world (CBS Studios (USA), DRG (UK), FremantleMedia (UK), Shine International (UK), Red Arrow International (Germany), ITV Studios Global Entertainment (UK), Absolutely Independent (The Netherlands), VIMN (USA), Eyeworks (USA), Global Agency (Turkey), ALL3MEDIA International (UK), Endemol Group (UK), Armoza Formats (Israel), Keshet International (Israel), Nordic World (Norway) and others), and to listen to speeches, keynotes and case studies by the leading experts in the sphere of TV formats from Europe, USA, Russia and other countries.

Ukrainian Content Market

UCM was held on September 11-13, 2013.  Over 165 sellers and 300 buyers worked at UCM this year. 85 exhibitors were presented at the market floors. Geography of participating companies has expanded as well: the delegates from 35 countries all around the world have attended the UCM. Some companies from Australia, Japan and Canada joined the UCM for the first time.

Leading international prodcos and distributors were presented at UCM 2013: Warner Bros. International Television Distribution, BBC Worldwide, ALL3MEDIA International, Banijay International, DRG, Endemol Group, Eyeworks Distribution, Global Agency, Telemundo Internacional, Televisa Internacional, The Walt Disney Company CIS, WeiTMedia and many others.

 

 

Film Business: challenges, features, opportunities

On September 11 the International Conference and Workshop "Film Business: challenges, features, opportunities was held in the new format. Several workshops were running in different sections of the conference area: Film Financing Workshop, Producers' Workshop, Legal Workshop, Visual effects and computer graphics Workshop, Film Promotion Workshop.

This format allowed participants to communicate directly with the most experienced film industry experts from around the world.

Among the speakers of "Film Business" conference were: Simone Baumann, Eastern Europe Representative German Films, Germany; Olga Zakondyrina, MGAP senior advocate, Russia/Great Britain; Razwana Akram, Partner Simons Muirhead & Burton, Great Britain; Kateryna Kopylova, Head of the State cinema agency of Ukraine, Ukraine; Georgy Malkov, General Producer Enjoy movies, Russia; Joël Chapron, Central and Eastern European manager for the promotion of French cinema abroad UNIFRANCE, France; Sergey Tsyptsyn, director of conference CG-event, Russia and others. The Conference gathered about 200 professionals of Film industry and representatives of MSM.

 

Special lecture of TV industry guru Michael Grindon “Global Television Trends: Implications for CIS territories”

On September 11 a special lecture of TV industry guru Michael Grindon “Global Television Trends: Implications for CIS territories” has taken up the KMW’s baton.

Michael Grindon - international TV industry expert, who turned SONY PICTURES TELEVISION INTERNATIONAL (SPTI) into a multibillion empire. Under Grindon’s supervision SPTI annual revenues grew up to $2.0 billion. Due to Michael Grindon and his team (1200 TV professionals worldwide) today Sony operates 122 channels in 140 countries with audience more than 435 000 000 households, production facilities of SPTI (9000 hours of a content) launched at more than 20 key territories worldwide.

At his lecture, Mr. Grindon presented a 360-degree view on what’s happening  in the global TV market and shared his opinion on how to deal with the challenges of the our time.

Mr. Grindon’s lecture has gathered about 200 local and international media industry representatives and press.

 

 

KIEV CoProduction Meetings

On September 11 for the first time in Ukraine started the project KIEV CoProduction Meetings, which opened up new opportunities for producers: producers could find a project for co-production, as well as found a partner for production of their TV project. The project gathered TV Producers, representatives of TV stations, trade associations, production companies, studios and investment funds from Europe, CIS countries and Caucasus. KIEV CoProduction Meetings contained 2 parts.

First part consisted of Discussion Panel where Speakers and Experts in co-production shared their experience and opinions on co-production situation in the region and Showcase – the successful experience of TV mini-series “The Spies of Warsaw” 2012 - coproduction of Apple Film (Poland), TVP (Poland), ВВС (UK), АRТЕ (France). Showcase keynote speaker - Dariusz Jablonski, CEO, Apple Film Production, (Poland). Michael Grindon, USA; Dariusz Jablonski, Poland; Bjoern Erichsen, Euromedia, Denmark were the Experts of Discussion Panel.

Second part was Pitching of TV Co-Production Projects. From the large number of submitted applications the jury has selected 40 projects from different countries - Ukraine, Russia, England, Australia, Brazil, Croatia, the Czech Republic, etc. A jury made up of producers by voting has selected 7 projects for the pitching session.  During 10 minutes producers presented the materials, explained the project conception, production specifics, the potential of the project and expectations from co-producers.

 

 

Television as Business

On September 12 “Television as Business 2013” conference gathered more than 200 representatives of Ukrainian and foreign media industrythe leading specialists of TV channels, research, advertising and media agencies. The conference was divided into 4 sections, which included the television advertising, anti-piracy, TV viewing and multimedia topics.

Alain Couttolenc, Senior European Leader for the watch side of the Nielsen business, Beata Kilkiewicz, Advertising Analyst,  IHS Electronics & Media; Aleksandr Bohutskiy, Director-President, ICTV; Fyodor Ogarkov, General Director, Media Group Ukraine; Yegor Benkendorf, Chairman of the Board, Inter TV-channel; Oleg Pavlenko, Commercial Director, Inter Media Group; Valeriy Varenitsa, Commercial Director, 1+1 media and Vladimir Manzhosov, Chairman of The National Television and Radio Broadcasting Council of Ukraine were among the experts of the conference.

 

Digital Broadcasting in Ukraine

On September 14, Digital Forum "Digital broadcasting in Ukraine" gathered professionals for discussion of the process of introducing digital television in Ukraine, its problems and prospects for 2013 – 2014 years. International experts from Switzerland, Germany, France as well as Ukrainian representatives of the DTT industry discussed the process of transition to digital broadcasting. Among the speakers of this year forum were Yulia Vynokur, General Director, TV-4 channel, Ukraine; Volodymyr Goncharevskyj, Development director, TAVR Media Radio Group, Ukraine; Helmut G. Bauer, Member of Directors Board, Institute of European Media Law, Germany; Olga Bolshakova, Advocacy and lobbying center manager, Independent Association of Broadcasters, Ukraine; Mykola Kniazhytskyj, Head of editors’ board, TVI Channel, Ukraine; Antoine Cormery,  Presenter and journalist, 24 Channel, France;

Dmytro Kravchenko, Deputy head, State TV and Radio Committee of Ukraine; Eve Salomon, Independent Chair Board, Europe; Ucha Seturi, Telecommunication and media law expert, IDFI, Georgia and others.
